Khaled El-Anany Becomes the First Arab to Lead UNESCO

Former Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled El-Anany has been elected as Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the term 2025–2029, marking a significant step that reflects Egypt’s ambition to play a stronger role in international institutions concerned with culture, education, and science.
El-Anany became the first Arab to assume leadership of the organization since its establishment in 1945, after winning 55 votes out of 57 from the UNESCO Executive Board – the highest number of votes ever achieved by any candidate in the history of the competition for this position
Born in Cairo on March 14, 1971, El-Anany graduated from the Faculty of Tourism and Hotels at Helwan University, specializing in tourist guidance, and later continued his postgraduate studies in the same field
His election represents a historic milestone for Egypt and the Arab world, reflecting international confidence in Egyptian expertise and reinforcing Egypt’s influential presence within one of the most prominent UN organizations dedicated to culture, science, and education
